Mark Klosterman, President and CEO, Named ‘Up & Comer’ by National Magazine

Mark Klosterman, President and CEO, St. Joseph’s Hospital was named to the 2012 “Up & Comers” list co-sponsored by Modern Healthcare magazine and Witt/Kieffer. Klosterman is one of two health care professionals in Illinois to earn this national recognition in 2012.

For 26 years, the Up & Comers recognition program has honored rising young leaders ages 40 years and younger who are making significant contributions in health care administration, management or policy. Klosterman is one of 12 executives who appear in the September 24 issue of Modern Healthcare, a national trade publication that covers the health care industry. A record 265 nominations were received in 2012.

“Being in the company of these health care professionals is quite an honor,” Klosterman said. “But my successes would not be possible without the dedicated team of colleagues at St. Joseph’s, as well as our leadership team at the hospital and Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS).” St. Joseph’s Hospital is one of 13 hospitals sponsored by the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis.

In selecting Klosterman, the magazine highlighted his combination of clinical laboratory experience, knowledge of information technology and his executive level experience. “The hospital’s quality, patient satisfaction, employee and physician engagement and financial performance are strong,” said Mary Starmann-Harrison, President and CEO, HSHS. “Mark is always looking for the next opportunity for improvement,” she added. The magazine also noted his genuine concern for patients and hospital colleagues, passion and approachable style as strengths of his leadership.

Klosterman was named President and CEO of St. Joseph’s Hospital in May 2010. In two years under his leadership, St. Joseph’s opened a new Priority Care, implemented new vascular screening and breast care programs, undertook a renovation of its Women and Infants Center, implemented an electronic health record and formed a Hospitalist Program. In addition, St. Joseph’s was selected as one of 14 Illinois hospitals honored by HealthGrades for 2010/2011 for ranking in the top 10 percent among the 3,775 health care facilities that participate in the annual Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey. Additionally, the hospital received the Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission for its commitment to high quality patient care.

Silver Level Honors Presented By American Red Cross

American Red Cross representatives, Regional Account Manager Tammy Lampe (seated, left) and District Manager Jennifer Pollmann (seated, right), display the plaque presented to St. Joseph’s in Breese in recognition of the hospital achieving the Silver Level in the ARC’s Champions for Life Program.

Representing the hospital during the presentation were (standing, from left) Professional Services Director Jene Bieri, Laboratory Supervisor Stephanie Reynolds, Community Relations Director Karyn Whitlatch who coordinates the hospital’s blood drives and hospital President and Chief Executive Officer Mark Klosterman.

To reach the Silver Level, the hospital collected 153 units of blood during four drives in 2011—two at the St. Joseph-Breese HealthPlex and two at the Breese American Legion. Because each pint has the potential to reach up to three people, almost 460 people may have benefited from generous donors attending one or more of the hospital-sponsored drives.

Food Service consistently receives scores of 100 from the Clinton County Health Department. Department colleagues serve almost 400 patient and cafeteria meals a day and provide lunches for Senior Renewal clients at the hospital HealthPlex and volunteer quilters at the Quilting Building, among other responsibilities.

Hospital Receives Accreditation for Digital Mammography

Following a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR), the St. Joseph-Breese Digital Mammography Program was awarded a three-year accreditation through 2015.

During the process, hospital staff and equipment is assessed by board-certified physicians and medical physicists from the ACR; the ACR’s Committee on Accreditation then provides a report to the facility.

The 2012 survey was the second for the hospital’s GE Healthcare Senographe Essential Digital Mammography System that was installed in 2009. St. Joseph’s Mammography Program has been continuously accredited since its beginning in 1992.

“The hospital and Mammography Program are committed to providing excellent care,” said hospital Professional Services Director Jene Bieri. “Continuous ACR accreditation is another confirmation by a professional peer review certification process.”

Hospital staff are pleased with the accreditation and even more so with being able to offer digital mammography service.

“The digital equipment offers new and powerful technology for the detection and fight against breast cancer,” said Medical Imaging Supervisor Mary Foraker. The $500,000 cost was underwritten by the Friends of St. Joseph’s using proceeds from annual mailings, golf tournaments and other fundraising activities.

“This system allows us to offer patients state-of-the-art mammograms and provide referring physicians with clear, precise, all-digital and extremely accurate images to use in diagnosis,” Foraker said. Quicker exams, greater patient comfort and easy wheelchair access are other benefits.

The Senographe Essential has been fully integrated with a Sectra Diagnostic Workstation which allows radiologists to review patient images quickly and easily and provides the capability to pull up previous mammography or other imaging scans for comparison.

Radiologists reading the images utilize a “Second Look” Computer Aided Detection or CAD unit. Studies show that using CAD on a screening mammogram can result in over 23 percent more cancers detected.

The system is also linked with the hospital’s Picture Archiving and Communication System or PACS, which integrates the hospital’s imaging procedures to be read and stored digitally or electronically and reviewed online by the referring physician over a secure internet connection.

Mammograms are offered in a dedicated mammography suite by staff who are registered radiologic technologists with special training in mammography. Staff members have an average of 12 years of experience; approximately 3,300 patients a year use the service.

Digital mammography is available Monday through Saturday; a physician’s order is required. For an appointment (requested), call 526-5396. For details, contact a physician or Medical Imaging at 526-5458.

The service is part of the hospital’s Breast Care program which also includes breast ultrasound, stereotactic- and ultrasound-guided biopsy, sentinel node biopsy, consultations and second opinions.

Hospital services for those diagnosed with breast cancer include surgery including sentinel lymph node dissection, reconstructive surgery, rehabilitation services by specialty-trained physical therapists, lymphedema program, dietary consultation and the Look Good-Feel better program.
