Zumba Classes

A six-week session of Zumba, the Latin-inspired dance-fitness class, will be offered from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursdays, May 10-June 14, at the St. Joseph-Breese HealthPlex.

Zumba combines fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body in an aerobic/fitness fashion to achieve a blended balance of cardio and muscle-toning benefits. The cardio-based dance movements are easy to follow and incorporate Latin and International music and dance steps.

Dancers and non-dancers can master a Zumba class because you do not need to know how to dance to succeed. The primary elements are that it’s fun, different, easy and effective.

Classes are $30 for the six-week series and HealthPlex membership is not required. Class size is limited.

“Vinyasa Yoga is a flowing yoga that is great for all ages and levels,” said instructor Christi Persing, a certified YogaFit instructor. “This style of yoga is designed to help improve health, performance and mental acuity of individuals interested in improving their fitness.”

The class welcomes beginners as well as those with experience who are looking for a class setting.

Cost is $30 for the six sessions and registration is limited to the first 20 participants. HealthPlex membership is not required.

Mother’s Day Support Group

A holiday honoring mothers may be one of the hardest days to endure when you have lost a child but the St. Joseph-Breese Share group may be able to provide some assistance when they meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, in the hospital Board Room.

Sponsored by the hospital’s Women and Infants Center (WIC), the group is for parents and families who have lost a child. Karen and Scott Gebke of Aviston serve as hosts.

“Ever since Easter, stores have been promoting Mother’s Day cards, encouraging everyone to ‘Send mom flowers on her special day’ or suggesting we treat mom to a Mother’s Day brunch,” said Karen Gebke.

“It can all be a bit much for anyone who has lost a child but talking and meeting with other parents who have gone through a similar situation may be beneficial,” she said. “Being reminded of that loss—and talking about it—may be the hardest thing in the world but it really does help.”

The Share group generally meets the second Tuesday of each month. Everyone is welcome—not just parents who delivered at St. Joseph’s in Breese—and there is no restriction on how long ago the loss occurred or how long someone can attend. There is no charge.

For more information, contact Karen Gebke at 228-7665, 709-2878 or sharestjosephs@yahoo.com. For WIC information, contact 526-5464 or hessenpreis@sjb.hshs.org.

Check Your Blood Pressure

A free blood pressure check will be offered from 8 to 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 8, in the Front Lobby of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese.

Screenings help identify potential problems or monitor an existing situation.

According to the American Heart Association, the higher the blood pressure, the greater the chance of heart attack, heart failure, stroke and kidney disease. Early identification can prompt lifestyle changes and focused treatment options resulting in less cardiovascular and kidney disease later in life.

At one time, readings in the 140/90 range were acceptable but now, those with a reading of 120 to 139 over 80 to 89 are considered pre-hypertensive, at higher risk and more likely to required medication.

The hospital hosts a free blood pressure check the second Tuesday of each month. Screenings are free and there are no dietary restrictions.
